A quick-fire and sociable way to talk about your research project, meet with, and learn from researchers with similar interests to your own. Among them is the objective to create a community who is sharing similar research interests. We have all been to those conferences where you only talk with the person who you are sitting next to during the conference dinner, or with a few researchers during the session breaks. To prevent this from happening, we are organizing a speed dating session. Speed dating allows participants to shortly talk with many fellow researchers in an informal way about what drives them in doing their research. More about this in format. Format Even though the setting aims to be informal, there is a structure behind the speed dating. The organizer will ring a bell when participants are expected to move to the next speed date. The time per date will depend on the number of participants who will join the session.

I feel like middle school is one of those key times in life where many students either take the path to become a life-long reader…or not. I pulled books that I frequently recommend from 7 different genres and put them in boxes at each of my 7 tables. It exposes readers to new genres that they may not seek out on their own. I set a timer like the one projected on the screen for five minutes.
For the first 30 seconds, they can peruse the books in the box at their table and select a book. Then, they spend 4 minutes reading the book to see if it hooks them.

Every year, the department hosts CEE Research Speed Dating Day to encourage community members to think outside the box and to draw inspiration from the research of their peers. From developing low-cost sulfur dioxide sensors to creating environmentally friendly human-made materials, the seventh annual event showcased the recent findings and ongoing projects of 50 community members.
Undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, research scientists, and faculty members shared their research through talks and electronic poster sessions. Cohen and Saavedra added a judging element with prizes this year, incorporating a competitive element to the event. Throughout the afternoon, faculty judges gave scores for each presentation and poster, and the winners were announced at the end of the night.
CEE Research Speed Dating Day was established to provide inspiration and a new perspective that could fuel others’ projects. By giving insight into the creative ways researchers approach and solve complex problems, it opens doors for other CEE researchers to consider how they could take similar approaches to their own work. The presentation sessions at Research Speed Dating Day demonstrated how current research from across the department is addressing and solving major issues around the world, and how the researchers plan to continue this work in the future.
Associate professor of CEE Jesse Kroll kicked off the research presentations with his presentation on low-cost sensing for air-quality measurements. Although air quality has drastically improved over the years with Environmental Protection Agency EPA standards, air pollution is still a problem. The big issue is fine particulate matter [PM]. Kroll pointed out that in the greater Boston area, there are only four air quality monitors.
Kroll, graduate student David Hagan, associate department head Professor Colette Heald, and undergraduate students that enroll in 1. These sensors are not only accurate, but they are much more affordable than the larger monitors.

We were in Barrow, the northernmost tip of Alaska, for the third summer in a row. In the previous year, we found out how we can catch male pectoral sandpipers. The species had been described as promiscuous or lekking, but nobody had studied an individually marked population. Fact is that the males are much larger and heavier than the females, and that only females invest in parental care.
Females are easy to catch:

At the start of a speed dating session, students are given a topic or question to discuss. Each student sits facing another student. Students typically remain in their partner-groups for about minutes before the instructor, who must keep time, notifies them to move on to their next partner. Once students rotate to their new partners, the timer is reset and students again discuss their topic or question, this time with a new discussion partner. The session proceeds in this manner, with each student thus getting the opportunity to interact with multiple other students in a series of brief one-on-one discussions Murphy, Depending on the goals of the session, the instructor may prepare just a few broad questions for students to discuss Murphy, Rather than preparing the answer sheets themselves, instructors can assign their preparation as a homework or in-class activity, as creating the answer sheets serves as another opportunity for students to learn the material Danczak, Another pre-session preparatory activity is to provide students with time to write on the topic to organize their ideas before they begin to converse with their peers Murphy, In other variations, students may be required to take a stand on a topic, or they may be asked to incorporate points made by other students into their position as the session goes along Murphy,

Muharrem Oner Advertisement As a psychologist, I have always found the concept of speed dating fascinating. In fact, some years ago, I decided to try it myself. As you can imagine, I did not find the love of my life. Fortunately, the majority of people do not seem to share my particular troubles with speed dating. Yet new research does point out a different dating problem: In fact, it can even prevent you from a making a decision in the first place.
You might assume that when trying to find a good dating partner, having a large, varied pool of potential candidates available to you is a good thing, but new research indicates that it is not. The name refers to a type of matchmaking event for people looking for the perfect life partners. January 23, By Susan Lampert Smith Researchers from the Department of Surgery and the School of Education got together last month to weigh the possibilities of research and other collaborations. Ambitious surgeon seeks educator who longs for a research partner. Okay, so there was no adult ad involved, but a campus event in December brought together about 60 faculty members from the UW Department of Surgery and the School of Education to brainstorm about joint projects.
That one resulted in several research partnerships between surgeons and engineers. Carla Pugh , vice chair of education and patient safety in the surgery department, said the drive to improve health care quality explains why surgeons are so interested in the assessment and coaching skills of professional educators.
The format provides opportunities for ‘speed dating’ style networking and pilot project funding to help catalyze a collaborative environment to generate new research ideas to advance team science and translational research.
In addition to recruiting consumers and organising the session, we also provide an advance training session for clients in listening and questioning techniques, help prepare individual topic guides for clients, and facilitate a follow-on download session to capture the key findings from the session. We can recruit whatever type of consumers you want to talk to. This means that a client responsible for a particular product or service gets the opportunity to explore opinions of that product or service right across the spectrum of consumers.
Its sole purpose is to bring clients close to consumers, to allow them to listen to and learn from consumers, and see how consumers talk about particular products and services. Whilst it may not tell the Research or Insights team anything new, it helps to convince internal clients of certain consumer attitudes or behaviours because they hear it for themselves, and not from a PowerPoint presentation.
The clients who most benefit are those who do not have many dealings with consumers, but whose roles involve making decisions that fundamentally impact on consumers. This is typically more senior personnel, who are key decision-makers, but who — by virtue of their position — have very little interaction with consumers.

Projects include developing a predictive model for archaeological site location, testing the predictive model, archaeological survey at Forest Service recreational areas along the reservoir shorelines, archaeological testing of sites recommended as being potentially eligible for the National Register, and conducting mitigation research for National Register eligible sites.
Ceramic vessel types include unglazed flower pots and drain pipe. The flower pots had scalloped rims and were unsigned. The drain pipes recovered from the kiln excavation are unusual because they are not commonly produced in the southeastern United States. The drain pipe, which was very likely intended to be buried while in use, was the only signed vessel type recovered from the kiln and that these were not consistently marked.
Projects include an archaeological survey along the reservoir shorelines to identify sites that may be eligible for the National Register.

Organizing has always been fundamental to economic, political and social well-being. As the 21st century unfolds, we increasingly find organizing that diverges from traditional bureaucratic structures. Such possibilities can be found in global teams, web-based collaboration, network structures, collective threats to security, privacy and legitimacy of science, micro enterprises, international non-governmental organizations, and alliances across private, public, and non-profit fields.
These developments raise opportunities for alternative modes of decision-making, just as they present challenges for accountability and efficacy. They also raise questions about how existing distributions of power encourage or limit organizational experimentation. UC Irvine has enjoyed a long tradition of innovative, interdisciplinary organizational research that dates back to the founding of the campus in the mid s.
