This introduces an interesting but obscure chapter in history, straddling Spain and France and consequently tending to be left by treatments of Spain to French history, and by treatments of France to Spanish history. Not all of it was ultimately retained by Spain, but readily accessible sources don’t seem to show either the difference between the old and new boundaries or what happened to the rulers of Navarre after the annexation — the table at right picks up at that point.
This seems like a grave oversight for the history of France. The history of Navarre is obscure enough that I found the full genealogy only with recourse to a succession of more serious and complete sources. Family trees for the Bourbons, such as given here , almost never go back further than the father, Henry, of Henry IV’s mother Jeanne. Brian Tompsett’s Royal and Noble genealogy originally enabled me to fill in the gaps, but there are some obscurities and questions in the information of both Tompsett and Hay that I had to compare with other sources.
Feldkamp [Philipp Reclam, Stuttgart, , pp. Fischer Verlag, , p. A less esoteric source with a complete list of kings is in the Oxford Dynasties of the World [John E. Morby, Oxford, , pp. The succession of France jumps to the House of Valois , but, as it happened, Louis X had a surviving daughter, Jeanne. She was ignored for the French Throne because of the Salic Law, which prohibited female succession, but the Salic Law did not apply to Navarre.

The modern day Spanish trace their descent from many peoples, including but not limited to Romans , Greeks , Phoenicians , Visigoths , Jews, and Muslims , and the modern nation-state was formed with the union of the Kingdom of Castille and the Kingdom of Aragon in by the marriage of their respective monarchs, Queen Isabella and King Fernando and the siege of Granada in , which would complete the Reconquista and end years of Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula. Through the discovery and later conquest of the Western Hemisphere that same year, an empire grew and soon became the one of the most powerful on the planet until it’s eventual decline over the course of the ‘s, culminating in a war with the United States at the very end of the century.
This, along with the failure of the conquest of Morocco and the feuds between political factions led to the last and bloodiest of five Civil Wars. The winner of the war ruled the country for no less than 36 years until his death, when the current Constitutional Monarchy now led by King Felipe VI was installed. Spain thus became one of the few examples in the modern day in which a monarchy is restored after being overthrown for quite some time, the other being Cambodia to be fair, the Spanish monarchy never actually renounced their rights for their country when the Republicans took over in Spain is bordered by France and the tiny Andorra in the north-east and Portugal in the west.

Understanding Gender Roles in Russia By: Alexandra Buck October 25, The most fascinating product of studying abroad is the discovery of different mentalities in a culture. Specifically, in Russia, society has completely different views of women and their expectations. Whenever they are out in public, Russian women dress pristinely, always in high heels, regardless of the weather.
Even now that it is starting to get colder and winter is settling in, women continue this custom with high heeled boots. It would be a social scandal to wear sweatpants or running shoes unless one is on their way to the gym. As one of my professors pointed out, it is ingrained in their minds that if a woman is in their presence, they, as men, should be on their best, most polite behavior.
While these ideas of chivalry have been discouraged in the United States—due in part to extreme feminism—the gender roles of men in Russia have nothing to do with the idea of women needing their help. On the contrary, men help women because they are women, i. What one needs to realize, though, is that many of the gender roles in Russia come down to ideas of love and marriage.
The biggest moment in the life of a Russian is the day that they get married followed closely by having children , because it revolves around the love that two people share.

Spanish Weddings Weddings are one of the most important types of celebrations in Spain. Traditional Spanish bodas or weddings usually follow the Catholic tradition and may have at least guests. However, like everything else, the number of guests really depends on the couple getting married. Today, more and more people are opting for a civil ceremony and a small convite or reception with family and close friends. A typical custom is to throw rice or rose petals as the couple exits the place where the ceremony has taken place, but many traditions have changed over time.
In the past, most weddings began in the afternoon and lasted all night and into the next morning. No matter what time they start, Spanish weddings always end very, very late or early, depending on how you look at it. In Spain, women wear their engagement ring on the ring finger of their left hand, while the wedding ring is worn on the ring finger of the right hand. One of the traditional customs in Spanish Catholic weddings is for the bride and groom to share 13 coins known as arras or unity coins, which represent their commitment to sharing the goods they have and will have in their future together.
What they do have are padrinos, usually the father of the bride and the mother of the groom.
