Seasonal ladders are a standard component of most modern competitive games, and lately I’ve been wondering why Dota 2 is absent from that list—particularly as Valve continue to tweak the MMR system. I’m no fan of the way the MMR system has been implemented, nor do like the effect it’s had, over time, on the Dota community. Valve’s approach has always been inconsistent—or at least, they’ve not been transparent about their reasoning.

Both have the target of reaching and destroying the enemy base using five characters on each side to battle it out. Some will argue they are carbon copies of one another, others will say they are entirely different, the rest will play CS: There is, for one reason or another, a fierce rivalry between the two player bases. Most of this, in my opinion, comes down to the passion each holds for its game. These MOBAs are the types of games people dedicate their lives to trying to make a living.
So, why is there such animosity? The DotA fanbase was steadily growing throughout the mod years and exploded when Valve released the official sequel via Steam. As of writing this, DotA 2 hosts heroes to freely and almost immediately choose from, Dark Willow and Pangolier being the latest additions. League has also seen a revamp in its interface update in and in saw a change to its currency system that was received with ambivalence.
